Atrial fibrillation is the commonest type of rapid and irregular heart rhythm that affects 1-2% of Singapore’s population and it may cause a stroke or a heart failure. A sudden onset of an abnormal heart rhythm can also lead to an abrupt loss of the heart function, resulting in a sudden cardiac death (“SCD”). It is estimated that 1,000 Singaporeans die from SCD every year, about half of whom are below 60 years old.
